5 Things I Want You to Know About Photographing Your Catholic Wedding
1. Every Church Has Different Photography Rules
Every Catholic church has its own rules when it comes to photography, and respecting those rules is extremely important to me! Most parishes will provide a list of guidelines beforehand, but I also love having the opportunity to briefly speak with the priest before the ceremony.
I've photographed weddings where only one photographer was allowed inside the church, and others where I was required to remain seated and photograph the entire ceremony from one specific spot. Every parish is different, and I'm always happy to work within whatever guidelines they have in place!
2. Church Lighting Can Be Tricky
Lighting can vary SO much from church to church, especially in older churches with darker interiors and stained glass windows. Flash photography often isn't permitted, and even when it is, I personally don't like using it throughout the entire Mass because I never want to be a distraction. I'm comfortable photographing in low-light situations and confident in my ability to capture your ceremony beautifully while being mindful.
3. The Details of Your Church Matter
One thing I pay especially close attention to when photographing Catholic weddings is the church itself. The stained glass windows, crucifix, statues, altar, and all of the little architectural details are things I absolutely love documenting. I know how much thought goes into choosing your church and I want those details to be part of your wedding gallery too. I also love capturing any personal religious details you choose to incorporate into your day.
4. Respecting the Mass Is Extremely Important to Me
This is something I take very seriously. You will never catch me walking onto the altar, interrupting the priest, or doing anything that would take attention away from the Mass.
Of course, I want to capture all of the important moments throughout your ceremony, but I also understand that there is a time and place for everything. As a Catholic myself, I know the Order of Mass, understand what's taking place, and do my best to anticipate moments without constantly moving around.
Beautiful photographs are important, but never at the expense of disrupting the Mass.
5. Matrimony Is a Sacrament, and I Want to Celebrate That With You!
I love being Catholic, I genuinely tell everyone that. Getting to witness others get married in the church is so special to me.
As a fully practicing Catholic, when appropriate, and with respect for the parish's guidelines and my responsibilities as your photographer, I also love having the opportunity to receive the Eucharist during your wedding Mass.
I want to capture the joy of your wedding day, but I also want to celebrate and honor the sacrament you're receiving. It's such a privilege to be trusted with documenting these moments!
